ARTFUL AND DRAMATIC, FILLED WITH SIGNS AND SYMBOLS

ON STEROIDS
I. MARS
 Bringer of War
The work opens with bombastic masculinity. Assertive, aggressive and daring, Mars stands among the ruins of battle with shield and sword in hand. As agricultural guardian, he also stands among stalks of wheat. An axe and pitchfork symbolize progress, perserverence and stamina. Dramatic clips from both world wars and nuclear testing reinforce his position as of god of mechanized warfare.
II. VENUS
 Bringer of Peace
Establishing the drama and contrast found throughout the work, Holst next moves to the opposite extreme: Venus, the god of peace, beauty and pleasure. Considered the water bearer and governess of water, she is placed among cascading streams and overflowing vessels. The pomegranate, with its blood-red juice, is a symbol of fertility. Much of the abstract imagery depicted here is used to convey the moment of her birth. Venus’s Greek counterpart, Aphrodite, is said to have risen as an adult from the foam of the sea.
III. MERCURY
 The Winged Messenger
God of communication, intellect, and the mind. Also god of commerce and thievery. His staff (caducues) with its two snakes has been adopted by the field of medicine and figures prominently in the movement. He holds a dreamlog representing history and knowledge. He stands atop a horned ram, which symbolizes fertility and is a frequent companion. And of course feathers - here depicted soft and floating, in marble and in gold - are closely associated with the winged messenger.
IV. JUPITER
 Bringer of Jollity
Father of the gods and the god of thunder. Breaking from the usual imagery of lightning, which so often represents him, here Templeton instead associates Jupiter with the particle. Electrically bound, the particle represents Jupiter’s fundamental place in the family of gods. He is also the sky god. Here he is accompanied by a ring of pillars meant to hold the sky in place. The swirling storm is a visual nod to the chaotic Jovian weather.
V. SATURN
 Bringer of Old Age
We open with the famous rings of Saturn, followed by scenes of ageless earth landscapes. Saturn oversees the slow advance of time. Next we enter a crumbling temple with stone rings that reference those of the planet. Saturn is presented in old, weathered granite holding an hourglass (time) and his iconic scythe (agriculture), which was used to murder his father Uranus . He stands with an ancient cedar tree (time) and is surrounded by a saw and hammer (work ethic).  A model horse at his feet recalls his four-horse chariot and his association with triumph and power. Saturn’s Greek counterpart is Kronos (who was a Titan), depicted here with his foot pressing down on a child’s face. This represents his troubled relationship to the gods, who were his children.
VI. URANUS
 The Magician
"The Great Awakener", or "Magician" as Holst refers to him, does not disappoint. Visually and musically this movement serves as a dramatic bookend with Mars - powerful, stunning and highly dramatic. Where Mars represents raw masulinity, Uranus is often seen as the 'epitome of maleness'. Uranus is the only god that does not appear in a physical location. In keeping with Holst's planetary theme, he is placed in space among the planets as a way to illustrate both his role as god of the heavens and his association with  unbounded innovation, nonconformity and revolution. His mighty scepter is topped with a 3D version of his symbol, which also recalls an atom, a universal symbol of innovation.
VII. NEPTUNE
 The Mystic
The god of the seas is also associated with dreams, illusions and imagination. Templeton masterfully uses footage of sea life and creative lighting to present a dreamlike world in which Neputune weilds his trident while perched atop a stand of coral.
